I don’t know how she does it?” It’s called small business….

Not that I’ve been trying to hide it, but a few of the more observant people around town have noticed that I’ve added a couple of kilos of late.

And while they could be excused for thinking I’ve overindulged on tasty treats during the winter months, it’s actually that OTHER reason.

Yep, I’m pregnant.

And while a new ‘baby bump’ generates plenty of congratulations and compliments (thank you to everyone for the well wishes), it has also brought quite a deal of wonder from those I meet and the regular question “I don’t know how you do it?”

This got me thinking….now don’t get me wrong it is very flattering when a client appreciates my hard work however I have a pretty simple answer to this question….it’s my job.

I chose to go into business for myself and that brings responsibilities and expectations – plus I love it!

It makes you accountable.

It’s all about making a commitment to your clients, to your family, to the prosperity of your business and ultimately to yourself.

Sure, it can be exhausting – anyone putting in 15-hour days will feel it after a while.

But stepping up when you need to is part and parcel of offering a service to clients.

And I must admit, I have been flat out the past few months overseeing back-to-back events plus executing our clients marketing programs.

I’ve definitely been kept on the hop, but it’s what I love.

You keep going not just because you HAVE to, but because you WANT to.

As anyone in small business will know, it’s all about negotiating the ebbs and flows that inevitably come.

Some days you’re flat out and think you’ll never see the finish line. Other days, it’s a breeze.

It’s all about perfecting that balancing act.  This is something many people have been doing since the dark ages because working, raising a family, keeping in contact with friends and forever multi-tasking isn’t a foreign concept in our current economy.  Did you notice I didn’t single our females….because men are doing it too!

My mentor passed on this philosophy; ‘you take work when it is there and you work on improving your business when things are slow’.

This mantra has always allowed me to take advantage of opportunities when they present.  He gave me a few other philosophies about business….but most of them can’t be repeated in a blog!  Let’s just say they were colourful.

We reside in a region that is flourishing at the moment – there is so much going on and so many good things predicted for our community.

It’s an exciting time to be in business.

And that’s why I consider it to be the perfect time to get your marketing right to capitalise on that inevitable growth.

If you have good, effective advertising in place then you can ride the wave as the local economy sky rockets. You can share in that good fortune.

On the other side of the coin, you can put your head in the sand and do nothing and then watch opportunity after opportunity slip by…..and of course blame someone else!

I know which game plan appeals to me the most.

But that requires a little hard work and going the extra mile.

That’s why, when people tell me: “I don’t know how you do it”, I very quickly point out that I’m not the only one doing this.

Farmers, single-parent families, doctors, nurses, the tireless volunteers. I don’t know how THEY do it. It’s pretty commendable.

Yes, I juggle. Yes I get stressed.

As a mum with a three-and-a-half-year old, a husband away from home for long periods on roster, a successful business that I’m eager to grow and now another baby on the way – I’ve certainly got my hands full.

But I’m juggling no more than anyone else.

It’s the only way to get ahead.

It’s the people with drive; the people with true passion who success comes looking for.

And like them, I just prefer to “knuckle down and get on with it”.

It’s a great way to approach business and a great way to approach life.

I wouldn’t have it any other way.
